Why the timing matters after a storm
Insurance policies have a window to report storm damage, and hail bruising is easiest to document in the first few weeks before weather wears it in. An inspection now costs nothing and gives you dated photos either way.
A hailstorm can pepper an entire roof in minutes, and the damage is rarely obvious from the driveway. We inspect and repair hail-damaged roofs across the Denver Metro, from bruised shingles to dented soft metals and cracked decking. We've handled hail repair in this region for more than 20 years, working directly with homeowners and their insurance companies from the first inspection through the final install. This page covers what hail damage actually looks like, what we check for on the roof, and when a repair is enough versus when the roof needs a full replacement.
Did a recent hailstorm leave your roof looking fine from the ground?
Hail damage is almost always a close-up problem, not a driveway problem. The stones bruise the shingle mat and knock loose the protective granules, and neither shows up unless you're a few feet away or up on the roof. A roof can take a real hit and still look normal from below, which is exactly why insurance policies have a window to file a claim. If a storm rolled through recently and you haven't had the roof looked at, that's the first step, before the damage turns into a leak or the claim window closes.
Warning signs to watch for
Bruised shingles and bald patches
Hail bruises the shingle mat and knocks granules loose, leaving soft spots you can feel more than see. Once the mat is exposed, the sun works on it fast and the shingle fails early.
Dented vents, flashing, and gutters
Soft metal shows hail hits clearly, even when the shingles nearby look fine. Dented vent caps and gutters are one of the easiest ways to confirm a storm actually did damage worth documenting.
Granules collecting at the downspouts
Granule loss from hail happens fast and often in a scattered pattern, unlike the even wear of an aging roof. A pile of granules after a storm is a strong sign the roof took a hit.
Cracks or punctures in the decking
A hard enough hit, especially combined with a falling branch, can crack the shingles and the decking underneath. This is the damage that turns into an active leak if it isn't caught during the inspection.
What is causing the damage
Hail bruising the shingle mat
The impact doesn't have to puncture the shingle to cause a problem. A bruise weakens the mat from the inside and shows up later as a leak or accelerated wear.
Wind driving the hail sideways
Wind-driven hail hits the roof at an angle instead of straight down, so damage often concentrates on one or two slopes instead of spreading evenly.
Debris impact during the same storm
Branches and other debris knocked loose in the same storm can punch through shingles and decking, which is a different repair than hail bruising alone.
An aging roof with less resilience
Older shingles that have already lost flexibility take hail damage harder than a newer roof, and the storm can be the thing that pushes them past a repairable point.
What to expect during the visit
We inspect and photograph every slope, plus the gutters, vents, and other soft metal, since those often show hail hits more clearly than shingles do. We chalk and count hail hits per test square the same way an insurance adjuster does, and we check for collateral damage on siding and screens while we're up there. If a tree limb or other debris caused a puncture, we'll note the decking condition too. By the end of the visit, we'll tell you plainly whether the damage supports a repair, a full replacement, or an insurance claim, and what the next step looks like.
Related services you may need
If the hail damage is severe enough to move past a repair, or if the roof was already near the end of its life, Roof Replacement covers a full tear-off and new install. For damage isolated to a single leak or a handful of shingles, Roof Repair may be all that's needed. Either way, a Roof Inspections visit is the starting point for figuring out which one applies.
The cost of waiting
Hail damage doesn't heal on its own, and bruised shingles keep losing granules with every rain and every UV cycle after the storm. A roof that could have been repaired right after the hail hit can turn into a full replacement a year or two later, once the exposed mat has broken down further. There's also a practical clock on it: most insurance policies limit how long after a storm you can file a claim, and damage that isn't documented in that window often gets treated as ordinary wear instead of storm damage.
How do I know if hail actually damaged my roof?
The clearest way is a close inspection, because hail bruising and granule loss usually aren't visible from the ground. Dented gutters, vents, or window screens after a storm are a strong hint the roof took hits too, and that's worth a free look before you assume everything's fine.
Will my insurance cover hail damage repair?
Most homeowner policies cover hail damage, but coverage details vary by policy and by how the damage is documented. We inspect and photograph the damage and work with your insurance company through the claim, so the paperwork lines up with what's actually on the roof.
What does hail damage repair cost?
Cost depends on how widespread the damage is, whether it's isolated to a few shingles or spread across the whole roof, and whether the decking underneath was affected. A documented inspection is the only way to get an accurate picture, and it's also the basis for any insurance claim.
