Why the timing matters after a storm

Insurance policies have a window to report storm damage, and hail bruising is easiest to document in the first few weeks before weather wears it in. An inspection now costs nothing and gives you dated photos either way.

Colorado's Front Range sees its share of hail and high wind, and Precise Roofing has spent 20 years documenting what those storms do to roofs across the Denver Metro. Hail bruises shingles and knocks granules loose in ways that are hard to spot from the ground, and wind gets under shingle edges and tears them loose. We inspect, photograph, and document everything, then work with you and your insurance company from that first look through the final install.

Did a recent hailstorm leave marks you can't quite explain?

Dents in your gutters or vent covers, granules piling up at the downspouts, or soft spots you can feel but not see are classic signs of hail impact. Hail bruises the shingle mat and strips away the protective granules, and from the ground the roof can still look fine while it's actually been compromised. Bruised shingles fail early because sunlight works directly on the exposed mat, so damage that isn't addressed now tends to show up as a leak later, often after the insurance window to file a claim has closed.

Signs of hail or wind damage

Dented gutters, vents, or AC fins

Soft metal shows hail impact more clearly than shingles do. If your gutters or vent caps are dented, it's worth checking the roof itself for the same hits.

Granules collecting at the downspouts

Hail knocks granules loose from the shingle surface, and they wash down into the gutters. Scattered granule loss after a storm points to hail, while even wear across the roof usually means age.

Creased or torn shingles

Wind gets under the leading edge of a shingle, breaks the seal, and either creases it or tears it off. A creased shingle won't reseal on its own and leaks in the next rain.

Missing shingles near the ridge or edges

These are the first spots wind attacks. Missing shingles here often mean the seal has failed nearby too, even where shingles are still in place.

What causes this kind of damage

Direct hail impact

Hail bruises and cracks the shingle mat and can expose the felt underneath in severe storms, weakening the roof's ability to shed water.

High wind uplift

Wind gets under shingle edges, breaks the adhesive seal, and creases or tears the shingle loose, especially along ridges and roof edges.

Falling debris during the storm

Branches and other debris carried by wind can punch through shingles and underlayment, sometimes cracking the decking underneath.

An aging roof that was already vulnerable

Shingles nearing the end of their service life have less flexibility and seal strength, so they take storm damage harder than a newer roof would.

What to expect during the visit

We inspect and photograph every slope of the roof, along with the gutters, vents, and any soft metal, since those often show hail hits more clearly than the shingles themselves. We check for damage in the pattern that tells the difference between storm damage and normal wear. Everything gets documented for the insurance claim if the damage is significant. Once the inspection is done, we'll tell you plainly whether there's damage worth filing a claim over, and if there is, we'll walk you through what the adjuster meeting looks like and stay involved through the repair or replacement.

Related services you may need

If the inspection turns up isolated damage, Roof Repair addresses it directly. If the roof is aging or the damage is widespread, Roof Replacement is often the more sensible path, and our Commercial Roofing team handles the same kind of storm documentation for flat and low-slope systems.

The cost of waiting

Storm damage that isn't documented soon after the event becomes harder to prove later, since insurance policies limit how long after a storm a claim can be filed. Damage left unreported starts to look like ordinary wear and tear to an insurer, even if it happened in a single afternoon. Meanwhile, bruised and creased shingles keep degrading with every rain that follows, turning a covered claim into an out-of-pocket repair.

Can hail really damage a roof if I can't see holes in it?

Yes. Hail can bruise and crack shingles without punching a visible hole, and in severe storms it can expose the felt mat underneath. Call us after any hail or wind event and we'll inspect the roof and document exactly what we find.

Do you help with insurance claims for storm damage?

Yes. We document the damage, explain every step in plain terms, and work with your insurance company through the claim and the install, so nothing gets missed along the way.

How soon after a storm should I have my roof checked?

As soon as reasonably possible. Insurance policies typically limit how long after a storm you can file a claim, and damage that goes unreported can end up treated as normal wear rather than storm damage.
